Book Review: The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

"In a future world, vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity."Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of "them." The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked--and given the ultimate choice. Die...or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend--a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what--and who--is worth dying for.

Before I started reading this book,  I was really excited about it with all the raving about the author and the book itself, although I have to say that I still didn't start the Iron Fey series, I know! shoot me ;) However, I'm gutted to say that it didn't live up to my expectations as I did have REALLY high ones. I love the cover though with the bloody tear and the eyes, just the cool and catchy type of creepy.

So the story follows Allie, an Unregistered human being whom lived in a world that was ruled by vampires and human beings were just either just there puppets to blood, yet well-fed or the unrigestered ones whom starved to death and lived in the fringes of the society. And as you can already tell, the world-building is just fantastic. It was skilfully crafted and easy to dive in.

Allie - our main character - was this kick ass girl whom refused to be a slay to anyone but to be quite honest, I hated Allie at first, during her whole phase of being a human but I truly started to admire her once she became a vampire and by the end of the book, I ended up loving her. And then there was Zeke who was - I honestly don't know how I felt about him - he annoyed me sometimes but then I was just unable to hate the guy, he was still so sweet. Still there was no big romance scences but I mean, the situation really didn't allow much.

The pace at the beginning of the book was just really slow and perplexing, I was starting to think like 'Uhhhh' but not until did she actually turn to a vampire that things started to spice up. So in my opinion, the beginning was unnecessarily long. After the fifth chapter, that's when it got interesting but then through out the rest of the book, it didn't have a consistent pacing which was annoying :\ At some points I was wondering what was the whole point of the story like I didn't see what was yet to come, what came then though was sort of unexpected but a lot of times I was just bored so it was the ending that made it up for me. However, it was well-written to be honest but nothing abnormal about the characters or the style of writing, just that very original twist that Kagawa took on the vampires fiction which I really liked and which made me really excited for the next book to come out!

Overall, The Immortal Rules was a gripping story about vampires and one that I really enjoyed, it stood out but still wasn't enough to be perfect. I'd recommend it as long as you enjoy and accept vampires because here vampires rules all the way! but don't expect it to be outstanding, keep your expectations on an average level.

Cool! this reminds me exactly of an Ethan Hawke movie called Daybreakers, but from the perspective of the human rebels and not the vampire civil servant.
